Our Story
The Atlanta spa murders which occurred on March 16, 2021, were a wake-up call for many of us in the Asian American community of metro Atlanta. This painful incident of anti-Asian hate was a close-to-home example of the increase of anti-Asian racism that we’ve been seeing across the U.S. since the COVID pandemic began. This event became a call to action to not be silent, disconnected, and invisible any longer.
Since then, we have gathered several times for prayer and worship and to tell our stories, beginning with a gathering on Buford Highway immediately after the spa shootings , annual Remember and Renew events on the anniversary of the spa shootings, an AAPI History event in May 2022, community dinners to support local nonprofits, and lunches for pastor and ministry leaders.
Why are we needed?
The experiences and backgrounds of Asian American Christians are as varied and diverse as the Asian American community in the US. We come together to create spaces where our stories can be told and our experiences better represented, known, and understood in the broader community of the regional South and metro Atlanta. We want to include the wide diaspora of Asians in America, including South Asians and East Asians, immigrants, refugees, and those who have been here for five or six generations. We want to create opportunities for discipleship and formation for Asian Americans, advocacy and connection, speak against injustices like anti-Asian violence, and ultimately the strengthening of the entire church of Jesus Christ.
